Question by thatgirlcate: I need a good exercise for love handles, what would work the best?
I am doing an exercise program, I am sore in all the right places, except that area. Isn’t it part of the back? What exercise really works that area, or what gym equipment will do the same? I want to do the exercise on my weight lifting/weight resistance day. My stomach, oblique area, the upper hip in back, and even my back above that area are all sore, but not this mystery area. My “love handles” (the part I want to work off) are in my low back off to the side, but not directly on the sides (waist); I don’t know if that is considered the love handle area, but I really want to work that off. Any tips or ideas?
Okay here is a bit more info. I think that I didn’t explain it very well. I know that I can’t work that area to loose weight in just that area; I just want to know how to work those muscles. I can feel the soreness in all the other areas, I was just wondering if I am doing something wrong because I don’t feel sore there. I want to work that area by adding another exercise to incorporate that muscle group, and was wondering if there were any tips. Thanks again, keep the ideas coming!!

I’ll tell you what worked for me. I used one of those foam rubber type bands around my waist (I think it is called an Exercise Belt?). That in addition to exercising caused me to sweat so much in that area that the fat just seemed to melt off.
P.S. I was told by a Personal Trainer that you can’t spot reduce.

Love handles are otherwise known as obliques. The exercises that work the oblique muscles are twisting motion side to side. Hold a barbell on your shoulders and turn to one side. Do this several times, then switch to the other side, or you can also lay on your side and do crunches on each side.

There are a lot of ways to exercise the lovehandles.
One: When doing aerobic exercises, stand straight. Turn your leg to the side. Bend your knee up towards your underarm. This can get pretty difficult when your not really flexible, so make sure you stretch first. High reps will make the lovehandles fade rather than grow
Two: Lay on the floor, on your side. Bend your legs, put the arm you are laying on straight out, put the other arm behind your head making an arrow to the cealing. Pull your upper body towards your legs and pull your legs towards your upper body. It’s like your curling your body sideways, and again high reps will make them get smaller.
Three: To focus more on the lower back portion, lay on your stomach, putting the weight mostly on your hips. Put your hands crossed under your head. Keep your legs straight out and lift one at a time up as far as you can go comfortably. Do these in repetition and you will feel the burn.

In order to get rid of your love handles you need to diet and include cardio training into your workout plan comprising of 30 to 45 minutes three to five times a week. Do not exceed 60 minutes. And it is true, you can not spot burn fat deposites away your body burns fat as a whole at the same time.
As for a as the exercises are concerned, they will not reduce the fat per say, what they will do is tighten and firm up the muscles under the fat so that when you burn off the fat you can see what you have accomplished in your resistance training.
Some good exercises would be;
1) Crunches, 2) Hanging leg lifts, 3) Sitting twists with a bar behind your kneck (No weight), 4) Cable crunches,
5) Declined situps, etc.. the list goes on.
Note, you can do all kinds of crazy abdomen exercises with a little imagination and that big exercise ball. The key to all ab workouts is to really make it burn.
